Budget Portable Projection for Simple Tags
I've been keeping to myself lately. My life is falling apart, but I'm pretending everything is fine. To distract myself, I've been working on a few ideas, and I'd like to share one of them today: how to make a cheap as fuck projector for assisting with simple spray paint tags.
This all started with a simple idea: try to recreate the iconic lambda tag from Half-Life 2, which is shown on the left. On the right is the original symbol from Half-Life which the tag is based on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seeing as the tag from Half-Life 2 appears to be freehand, I attempted to recreate it myself the same way, but I quickly learned that it is surprisingly difficult to replicate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(In retrospect, I wasted paint covering up the previous attempts. I could have just used more cardboard, as it's much cheaper and abundant than paint.)
At this point, I knew I had to come up with a solution for how to stay precise while also keeping it freehand. I came up with a few ideas, but I eventually settled on trying a simple method of portable projection. The idea would be to make a basic projector using a combination of cereal box cardboard, tape, sandwich bag plastic, and permanent marker ink which could then be taped to a cellphone and have its light shown through it.
Here's the first prototype and how it looks in use:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see the projection is fuzzy and the projector has to be REALLY close to the target surface. Not great.
The second prototype ended up bigger and longer, which looks like the following when in use:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The projections from this version are much more clear, but the light is slightly darker because the projector has to be further away. A worthwhile tradeoff, in my opinion.
Even so, there was still room for improvement. The design for this projector was still too complicated and didn't work as well as I wanted it to.
I also realized here using a negative of the graphic would likely work better. The best way to achieve this - instead of covering plastic sheets with tons of permanent marker ink - would be cutting a stencil out of something like cardboard or paper.
The third and final prototype ended up being the winner, having the simplest design and producing the clearest projections. It's even reusable with masking tape, allowing us to switch out gobos (the thing with the design cut into it) without causing much damage to the projector or the gobo itself.
Tumblr media
I made and tested two gobos. One had the original design, the other had a thin version of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll explain how to make the projector and gobos later on in this post. Just know that, in the end, the design with the thinner lines ended up being the most useful.
In testing, I found that attempting to follow a design directly from a projection ended up too difficult as my hands would warp and block the light...
Tumblr media
Yeah...
So instead, I tried gently blotting some paint over the projection before moving the projector out of the way and finally connecting the dots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite me failing to follow the dots on the bottom-left of the design, this produced the best result and was an excellent proof of concept! I'd recommend blotting clearer dots than I did, though.
=================================
Ok, so here's my blueprint for both the projector and the gobos that go with it.
Tumblr media
It's pretty straight forward. For the projector, cut where solid lines are shown, and score and fold where the dotted lines are shown.
The flaps on the bottom overlap in a circular arrangement, with either clockwise or counter-clockwise overlaps, much like how you'd close a box without using tape. In this case, we will use tape to help hold these flaps in this arrangement. We'll also want to tape the long edges of the projector together (not shown, but you'll know what I mean when you get to this part).
Tumblr media
The flaps on the top are folded outward instead and act as surfaces for aligning and attaching our gobos to.
As for making the gobos, I'd recommend cutting them out of card stock (it's the same type of poster paper I've been using for my other stencils). Even though the gobo will be 3" x 3", the design has to fit in a 2" x 2" space in the center. The 0.5" of padding is where the tape goes when attaching it to the projector. For how to make stencils, please refer to this other post of mine:
The last thing I forgot to mention is that you'll need something to hold your projector setup in place. I have a tripod and a simple cellphone mount which can hold my phone in the correct position and angle while I blot the design onto my target surface.
Here's the mount I use:
And that's about it! I'm pretty happy with how this all turned out, and I hope it's useful for you too... for legal purposes, of course :)

Your swsh art always makes me want to replay the game because i love it and its my favorite pokemon game and every time i play another pokemon game i think of it how i miss certain elements from swsh. Then i boot up the game and im once again caught in the 1 hour 40 minutes hand held intro and im like ah- now i remember why i have been playing other pokemon games instead of this one. Happy (late?) birthday!
you don't want to listen to hop? you don't want to hear him teach you about type matchups? you don't wanna let him cheer u on...? 🥺 waa....?
#ask#bakuspeech#I am joking to be clear lmao#thank u happy bday to me !!#tbh I got real used to pokemon overexpositioning since sumo lol. it's kind of a boon for me#cause I'm not a Gamer™ and my brain takes stuff on Very slowly#so the tutorial stuff and the cutscenes give me time to catch up. also it's still fun to see these guys run around#I am in fact here for these guys lol. weird thing to say about the game built on and with an essential focus on the pokemon I know#I just like humans! I just like watching hop running circles around my player character all excited#and leon being a dick to his hometown people when they're expecting 'leon' back and they get the champion instead#and you get to see sonia used to dealing with it but the frustration never fully fades and how close she is to hop and that picture's bleak#listen this is my bread&butter lol. leon really doesn't show up That much himself around the game he's a shadow casted over the story#it's always interesting to me! does Not mean it's not sluggish to other people who want to play the game lmao#but I like it. also the tutorial at least the first time around was necessary to me bc the difficulty scales way up later on lol#it's a very good first pokemon game I maintain this. sumo never managed to teach me the same way swsh did#I still care drampa tho thank u drampa for being real I love u#lmao it feels like saying I'm not a Gamer™ violates some tenets of having adhd somehow. but its just the case here#the main genres I play are 'itch games tangential to the haunted ps1 people' and 'popcap-style casual games'#my sport's figuring out shapes n movin my stylus sadly. well not sadly why would that be sad

TLDR: Recently Ive been thinking alot about splatoon OCs me and my kid made and i started doodling little graffiti arts for them I liked how they where coming out and decided that i would dust off some photoshop and make them for real. I followed This from youtube sine im bad at both handwrighting and drawing.
So recently I've been doing my best to find something to bond with my daughter over. In a lot of my sentimental times I think alot about when I used to come home from work and find her playing splatoon, or how she used to sing fan covers in the back seat of the car while we where on long car rides. I loved how she seemed to live in that world especially when I saw she named her account after her character and started cosplaying characters at conventions.
We started playing together and of course with her dozens of hours of experience I got whomped. (Whomp whomp..)
Soon after figuring out the controls and that I was clearly not meant to use this game's version of a sniper rifle (especially not in a 3rd online person arena) I started to get the hang of it well enough to begin playing against her on lunch breaks at work (because she was home schooled) as often as I could. Soon we had a mini YT channel where I was playing one of my favorite influential games with her (earthbound) and she was talking me though my first playthrough of Splatoon 2!
We had lots of jokes and I was collecting equipment like crazy. With that I was thinking more and more about what my splatoon character would be, and so was she. Fast forward a few years and a game later and every splatfest weekend I have her over at my house for the weekend and we're stocking up on Baja Blast and tacos to fuel our frantic splatastic bomb rush. We even came up with cheeky names for our online gametags. She was Lil' Hype-R-Bomb and I was Kil-R-Wail(because I'm not allowed the second L )
Soon I posed a question to her. "Do you have an OC?"
Not long later we started thinking of Hyperbomb and kilrwail as actual charaters with tragic backstories, lore and even a secret base made from an old Taco bell (for unlimited reserves of nuclear Baja blast of course!)
Soon at work I was doodling and thinking of my character's story, and trying to doodle up a tag for him in the style of splatoon and jet set radio. I found myselt trying to use sacred geometry to plot out the letters and make crazy shapes and trying to combine them with the baja blast logo. (BTW it doesnt look good when you suddenly stop working to scrawl these things out, I wont stop you just know its weird and so am I and I'll stop when I die.) I'm not much of an artist, my doodles usually consist of the same chao character I draw over and over and still cant get right. And my penmentship is relegated to an edgy script ithat takes me an awkward amount of time to scrawl out (it actually comes from a friend's design of my old online signature) So needless to say it came out like a pancake in an air fryer.
Soon I'm trying to dust off photoshop skills and failing off and on to get my tablet to et it right. My penwork isnt great but i couldnt get it to come out the way I liked with the pen tool. one night i was settling in earlier than normal and decided I had time to follow a photoshop tutorial and sought one out to help me decide on a style that I could make and edit easily enough if we need changes. I ended up learning a few things about layer styles that have changes since PSCS3 and its almost exclusively layer styles.
Anyway thanks for letting me rant into the void, I may start blogging the story of our OC characters, not sure yet. Whoomy!

Combining Black and White Stencils
This is a follow-up to these two posts:
So the obvious next question - when having both a black and white monochrome stencil of the same image - is "what happens when you use them together?"
(In retrospect, I should have added dots at the corners of the graphics so I could line up the stencils more easily.)
Here's black on white, then white on black:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see that there's large gaps where mid-tones would go. You could create another stencil for a grey primer layer that goes underneath. However, I wanted to keep this as simple as possible, so I'm only testing this out with black and white.
To make this work, I used the following mask to "paint" a primer layer:
Tumblr media
Here's black over white primer, then white over black primer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see that the one of the left most resembles a Bansky piece, which makes sense. In this video, you can see that he applies the black stencil first to act as a guide, then manually applies white paint before (assumedly) applying black with the stencil once more. After that it's just a lot of touch up work.
youtube
Let's go one step further. What if we apply a primer using the mask, then use the stencil of the opposite color, and finally use the remaining stencil over that? Well here's white over black over white primer, then black over white over black primer:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While this does add back in some details that would otherwise be missing, there isn't much improvement. In the end, whatever combination works best is up to you.
Anyway, this was just to show how you might go about using these stencils to instead make dichromatic art. Hope this was helpful!

The Chained Ogre is first found in Outskirts Wall - Stairway immediately up the stairs, shackled to a stand. By eavesdropping on the two soldiers before the Mini-Boss, it's possible to learn that enemies with red eyes are particularly scared of Fire, which is why the Flame Vent found in the Hirata Estate is especially useful against the Ogre to inflict him with Burn.
Before engaging with the Chained Ogre, it's best to defeat the two Ashina Swordsman at the bottom of the stairs and to be careful not to attract the attention of the Ashina Spear-Bearer atop the hill to the left.
